Michael Kent
February 29, SC Ballroom, 7pm
Michael Kent is one part comic, one part magician, and one part smartass. He thinks about the art of magic differently than most magicians. "I hate being frustrated from something that's supposed to be entertainment," Michael says. "It's like they're saying 'Look, a bird! - I'm smarter than you!' It shouldn't be like that. Most magicians treat their audiences like they're stupid." Michael Kent does it differently. In a self-deprecating style that might make you think you're watching a late night talk show, Michael's humor and magic has been described by America's colleges as "clever, sarcastic and absolute fun." From pretending he can read the minds of audience members to performing emergency surgery on a rubber chicken, one thing's certain: You've never seen a show like this before.
Baby Wants Candy
April 5, SC Ballroom, 8pm
Baby Wants Candy, the worlds premiere musical improvisation theater group has entered its 10th year of open run in Chicago. BWC asks the audience for a suggestion of a musical that has never been performed before. The first title they hear then becomes the basis and title for that 60 minute one act musical. Using this format BWC has performed over 1,400 different musicals. Founded in Chicago, BWC has performed completely improvised musicals to sold-out crowds from Singapore to Edinburgh. Jack Helbig, of the Chicago Reader, praises The Improvised Rock Opera, by Baby Wants Candy, shows that the group has become the very model of smart, physical, quick-thinking, and just plain silly long-form improvisation. Edinburghs The Scotsman says Chicagos Baby Wants Candy could convert the most cynical enemy of musicals with their improvised version, which combines creative wit with awesome performances. They are an entertainment phenomenon and I am in awe of their talent. You cannot fail to have your world rocked by these people. I have one word for it: Go! and TimeOutNY awarded BWC Best Visiting Comedy Show asking readers Dont like musical improv? Neither did we until we saw this truly outstanding Chicago troupe.
